Reading pages 4 and 5 of the Cape Times on 23 May was ironic and sad at the same time. On page 4 “Extra security for Cyril Ramaphosa” explained just how ridiculous the situation in parliament has become. Since the EFF has regularly exhibited their lack of ability to behave like adults in the prescient of parliament, taxpayers must incur more expense to protect MP’s from each other.

It seems as if our leaders have no problem to show the world how they can treat each other while the ordinary MP earns nearly a R1 million per person. If they want to behave like hooligans they could simply fight in the parking area, in the toilet, in the dining room etc. Must they fight on television and provide proof to the world that African leaders can easily revert to barbarity at the drop of a hat?

On page 5 yet another resident has been shot in Hanover Park. Twice last week people on their way to visit my office seeking help with Council matters cancelled appointments because of the shooting.

Across the metro, people are shot and killed for no reason, just because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. This includes women and kids going to school or simply walking to the shop.

I wonder if those parliamentarians enjoying their free lunches and R1 million salaries have any genuine feelings of concern for the people whom they serve when they fight like thugs in parliament.
